55. (30yr female) Trying her hardest to lose at least 15kgs! I'm embarking on a lifestyle change as I have gained 10kgs in the last 6 months. 87. I have been using protein supplements on and off for about 4 or 5 years, currently using Horley's Ice Whey. Over the last few months I've been getting an acne-type skin irritation on the backs of my shoulders, which I've never suffered from before. 88. I am a 26 year old female full time stay at home mum with two kids who is wanting to loose 5 kilos but mainly tone up & lose baby belly fat, I currently weigh 64kg. Five weeks ago I started boxercising once a week & recently purchased a cross trainer which I work out on for 30 minutes at least 3 times a week and have since lost 16cm body fat (8.5cm from belly). I am currently doing three am weight sessions, followed by 20 min cardio. I take kuan and glutamine before and after these sessions.

I have recenctly added Bikram Yoga to my routine to add a bit of variety. Bikram Yoga is the hot yoga where the room is heated to about 39 degrees and the class goes for 90 minutes. I am doing this at least three afternoons a week. When practiceing this yoga regularly they recommend taking electroyltes. I have been taking the musashi recovery stack after the class. Do you think I should stick with this or switch to an electroylte?

123. I have been taking Max's Hydroxyphase protein 3 times a day with an additional supplement of L-carnitine (first thing in the morning and before lunchtime workout - total 1000mg). I do 50-60 minutes of cardio 6 days a week (running and rowing), and have tried to maintain a diet of ~1000 kcal per day (fresh fruit and vegetables, low carb, high protein, tuna, nuts etc), as i have to get to my gymnastic competition weight of 44kgs (currently 49.5kgs). I need to reach this weight in 4 weeks (MAX).

126. I cycle to and from work each day (15km each way, quite hard) and run 8 - 10 km a couple of evenings. I'm also adding two 20 - 30 km walks a week as I head towards a 96 km endurance event (walking/shuffling) in July. I'm 187cm and 88kg. I eat normal family meals - nothing too scientific in my dietry mix. If I want, I can increase my intake of complex carbs quite easily through what I eat. 133. Hi I currently attend the gym x5 a week varying weight work with cardio. I used to take hydroxyphase prior to having my son. Is it safe to use during my next pregnancy as I still intend to attend the same weekly sessions once pregnant again? I weight train 3 times a week and cardio 3 times a week on alternate days and am already seeing results and have lost 3.5 centimetres on my waist plus i am beginning to see some definition in my calves and upper body too. Seems to be working well!

My current supplies of NO Explode, Cellmass and powerfull are running low, so i just purchased NaNO Vapor, humanover and, Musashi creatine recovery stack.

Because i changed from cellmass to CRS should i cycle off the creatine from when i started taking cellmass or CRS?

Is it a good or bad thing to change supplements over a short period? My stack of Muscletech Nitro-Tech Hardcore, Cellmass, Powerfull and No Xplode will probably last 5 weeks all up. Should I have stayed with that for another 5 weeks then cycled off and gone with something different? Or are both stacks essentially the same?

Should i purchase another bottle of PowerFULL to take in conjunction with Humanover?

I am a bit new to all this and i am just trying a whole bunch of stuff.

Hi, not sure if you can help but thought I'd ask! My objective is improve climbing through development of climbing muscles and achieve leaner body.

I climb 3 times a week to exhaustion (through climbing and chin ups finishing with 18kg vest) and want to gain better recovery, strengthen core muscles (to reduce damage - fingers & elboes are most prone to damage) and reduce latic burn?

Age 40, weight 55KG and am coeliac. Tend to eat breakfast of eggs on LOW GI toast or protein shake musashi 92 with soy milkor cereal (low fat, sugar & GI with high protein and fibre) with soy milk. Lunch is lean protein from fish or chicken with veg or salad. Dinner is 92 protein shake with soy milk or yogurt or fruit and post training is Redbak WPI shake. Snacks would be fruit, nuts, yogurht or carbless bar (depending on my hunger).

Alternate climbing days I do yoga or running - tried weight lifting but wasnt recovering climbing muscles enough. Try not to eat carbs on non climbing days.

Current suplements are HMB 1000mg Super Amino 4800mg, vit E 500iu, vit C 1000mg, Regenr8 & spirulina. During training I take gatorade.

Any suggestions from above on what I can do to improve recovery, eliminate latic burn & reduce damage without gaining weight (need to be lean and lite)?

Hi There, i had been stacking USP power capsules 4 a day + Muscle tech Nano Vapor just before training and after training Muscle tech Nitro-Tech Hard core, i take them only when i train, I train 5 days weights and 3 days morning just cardio 2 days complete rest .. Everything was going well for 4 weeks , training was good put only 1 kg mass , made me more stronger because of Nano, Although i would luuv to add some more weight .
But i ranout Nano so replaced with BSN NO-xplode+Power capsule+Nitrotech, i consumed for 5 days, had no problems but i couldnt find as strong as Muscle tech Nano..i did doubble the intake of Noxplaode i didnt feel strong, is it wrong to swap different brand while stacking ?? because after 1 week it really hit on my stomach badly and upsetted belly.. like a diarhoeaa

But it had happened to me before, when i was just stacking Muscle tech nano alone, is that because of overdose or not much drinking water ... But i stopped nano for 6 weeks and started again had no problem...

204. I have been taking Nitrotech hardcore from Muscletech for the last 1.5 years as a post-workout supplement, I take 2.5 scoops with 12oz of water and I add either an apple or a banana to sweeten it a little (without the fruit I just can't stand the taste); questions:

206. Hi, I'm 28 yrs old male looking to get fit. I just want to know if I’m taking enough carbs on my diet and should consider taking protein shake with less carb in it. I’ve cereals every morning, sometimes I take the Musashi Blend then have cereals, in-between breakfast and lunch I’ve fruits like banana, apple and light energy bar, have lunch mainly with rice, veges and meat. I am currently trying to lose fat and have been doing my cardio first thing of a morning on an empty stomach and my weights (3 day split) of an afternoon. When i weight train I have protein 1 hr before and directly after. I go to a pretty small gym and find that it is getting a bit frustrating of an afternoon trying to get my weights done (to many people in their etc,) if I was to train weights of a morning would I still need to have my protein shake 1hr before? then directly after followed by breakfast? or is it best to perservere and try and stick to afternoons?

A. It is hard to recomend a single product. Some people respond well to one and not so to another. In my humble opionion only, I would recomend a combination of Syn-tec Thermalene and Vital strentgh Hydroxy Ripped. The Thermalene is a blend of extract ingreedience which are far more powerful than fruit and root alone. The difference is like juice to a concentrate formula. I also really like Vital Strength Hydroxy Ripped, very cost effective and the feedback from customers has been great.

A. Good question. I prefer to use Ultimate Thermo Fuel only before workouts and use Thermalene everyday before meals. Thermalene has coleus in it as well which I consider to be one of the best fat burners on the market.

A. Depending on your age, a testosterone booster would be good. Anything that icreases the output of Test in the body will aid greatly in muscle development (Thats why guys almost always have more muscle than girls).

There are also some studies on the benefit of stacking creatine with HMB, for strength and recovery. Oh and don’t forget a high quality vitamin and mineral formula.

A. Many mass weight gain formulas on the market use a low quality of protein which is high in lactose. The symptoms you describe are typical of someone with intolerance to lactose.

I recommend using a high quality mass gaining powder like Max’s XTG or Optimum gainer. Both of these powders have virtually no lactose at all and are great for increasing calories and muscle mass.

A. Funny you should say that; My mother always thought so. When I was younger and living at home she always used to know when i was on creatine. As far as I can tell there is not direct link between creatine and the endocrine system the might have an effect on hormones.

Having said that ...my mum would say disagree. Perhaps the heavier weight you can lift increases the amount of testosterone produced and increases aggro? I'm just guessing here. Sorry i cant be more definitive.

A. Yes. The creatine-caffeine myth is just that. My only concern would be if you use huge amounts of any diuretic. Creatine wants to hold more water (inside the muscle) in the body while caffeine pulls water out. So long as creatine is taken away from caffeine and you stay on top of your water, mild coffee use will make almost no difference at all.

A. Creatine increases your ATP (adenosine triphosphate) in your muscles which increases your energy production and your recovery. This does not directly effect fat burning but with an increase in energy output this may indirectly effect fat burning.
I have not heard of Kre-Alkalyn.

Firstly please check with your doctor - we don't understand why they state that breastfeeding women shouldn't drink protein (i think it is a requirement of the TGA)....we know a lot of women who have done so with no problems at all (as long as the protein does not contain any added products to assist with fat loss). Perhaps a formula of Musashi BCAA's or Kuan would be best - these give you all of your amino acids without any artificial flavours or colours and are great for muscle recovery without any calories (and they have no warnings on the labels about breast feeding). Still i must suggest that you check with your doctor first :)

A. How have you measured your results;

1. Skin fold measurements
2. Tape measure
3. Mirror and Scales

If method three, your results can not be properly quantified. Gains can be diffcault to ascertain other than through method 1.

However dont forget the basics, train HARD and smart (meaning high intensity short duration), Consume 2g of protein per kilo of bodyweight everyday, Get plenty of sleep.

Dont get discouraged. Anyone who follows a 4-5 day split and eats/rests well will grow mucle unless there is an underlying hormone problem. It will take time, but you should have definately put muscle on EVEN without taking supplements in 3 weeks.

Keep going, get accurate tests and review after another month.

1. Use vitamin E and strecth mark creams topically

A. Consider using Syn-Tec creabolan, Musashi Recovery Stack or Muscletech Cell-Tech DURING your training. Using one of these in conjuntion with an Awesome mass 1 hour before and directly after training should have you bust through that 5lb limit you have have reached.

Q. Hi. Any chance of stocking some of the cheaper 7-keto versions - specifically "NOW 7-Keto" which seems to be ridicuolusly cheap in the US by comparision to the only one availabile in Australia (ie PowerZone's 7-keto). A. It would be a good idea to see if you can import any in from the USA rather than use powerzone - they are extremely poor quality and we deleted their range when we found out about their manufacturing standards.
Not sure how easy it is to get stuff in from the USA anymore with the recently changed laws though.

A. Sounds like you may be lactose or whey intolerant. I would suggest perhaps you try a free-form amino acid instead such as Musashi Kuan (Yellow) - it is calorie free so if you are bulking you can't count on it for any of your calories for the day. A. Yes that would be a good combination. You could also look at Horleys Ripped Factors for a protein powder and BSc Viraloid as a test booster instead of the Axis HT, or just stick to what you have suggested because that is fine too.

A. No. Due to the cost per serve, we found that the 1kg never sold. It is one of our best selling proteins and on a scale of 1-10 for taste i would give it about a 7.

A. Go for A liquid thermogenic like Hydroxy Hardcore, Lipo6 or Ultimate thermo Fuel. Fast delievry and easy absorbtion means it will be active quicker than a powder capsule or tablet and less likely to make you feel queasy.

Post training take a shake to protect muscle tissue from breakdown, I recomend a WPI or free form aminos like Musashi Yellow (Kuan) or BCAA's.

A. Much depends on your training, metabolic rate and nutrition. However use a high carb protein before and after training and be wise with your carb late in the day. I would use Syn-Tec Maximus, Horleys Awesome Mass or Musashi Bulk 1 hour before and directly after training. I would also recomend usinf Creabolan, Cell-tech or CreatineRecovery Stack during training to supply a high amount of carbs during my training periods as this is when the body needs a lot of fuel.

Q. I have been using protein supplements on and off for about 4 or 5 years, currently using Horley's Ice Whey. Over the last few months I've been getting an acne-type skin irritation on the backs of my shoulders, which I've never suffered from before. A. No. I havent heard high protein diets causing acne, it is normally due to hormonal issues. I myself got acne on my back when I was 19 when training really hard and gaining plenty of size. I put this down to hormonal changes brought on by heavy training.

Q. I am a 26 year old female full time stay at home mum with two kids who is wanting to loose 5 kilos but mainly tone up & lose baby belly fat, I currently weigh 64kg. Five weeks ago I started boxercising once a week & recently purchased a cross trainer which I work out on for 30 minutes at least 3 times a week and have since lost 16cm body fat (8.5cm from belly). I am so happy with the results but was wondering if I should start taking a protein shake after each workout.
My question for you would be which protein powder I should use, I was looking at Horleys Womens SCULPT? My diet is fairly healthy though certainly room for improvement?

A. If running is for fat loss and not just fitness i would reccomend taking 2-3g* of BCAA's before your run and a 30g^ protein shake directly after. I also take BCAA's before and after weights with a protein shake.

*Take 1g of BCAA's per 25kg

A. Always consult your doctor before taking supplements, even if recommended in good faith.

You food intake is going to play the major role in you shedding the baby fat. I would recommend a protein shake mid morning and mid afternoon. Fat burners are off limits (for baby) however CLA MAY be ok (again consult your Doctor). Even using L-Carnitine may not be advisable.

Small regualr meals and regular cardio are the best ways to loose the fat. Also breastfeeding can be very good also as long as you dont over-compensate by consuming too much food.

Q. I understand creatine is great for building muscle but cant be taken with supplements with caffene as it has the opposite effect(dieretic). A. They can be taken togther but it is not recommended. As you say they have an opposite funtion in the body and are not complementary.

Q. Please help
I am currently training 3 - 4 days per week, pending body soreness. At present it is taking me 7 - 8 days to recover enough from a chest workout to train it again. This soreness is also inhibiting shoulder training. Please any advice would be great?

A. Take the time to heal, if you have not recovered after a week...dont train.

To speed up the healing process take more carbs during a workout (like Syn-Tec Creabolan or Musashi Creatine Recovery Stack). Make sure you are consuming at least 2g of protein per kilo of bodyweight per day. Make sure you drink plenty of water (1 litre per 30kg of body weight) and are getting quality sleep each night (7-8 hours).

Try to add in more BCAA's pre and post training if things are still repairing to slowly.

I hope this helps and is the basis for quality recovery for more muscle mass.

A. If sing the mass bulder ONLY before and after weight training and using the Hydroxy ripped during the rest of the day, this can work very well. Just cut the carbs outside of training time and late at night (unless training at the time).

A. From my understading of Acne it is more hormone related than anything. I am not aware of a thermogenic that effext hormone levels that will affect problems associatd with Acne (usually this question is related to test boosters). It may be as simple as trial and error.

A. You are correct, maintaining is always hard. It is simple math, you must consume more calories than you burn. As you put on more mass, your body burns even more calories. The old advice of EAT, EAT, EAT! still holds true. Go for mass gainers like Awesome Mass, peanut butter and banana sandwhiches, egg noodles, mashed potatoes, sago, tapioca, or rice dessert. Q. Hi. Im at my wits end. I am 32 yrs old and trying to lose 6 kg that i have put on over the past 12 mths. I have done this previous years thru low fat diet and exercise which has taken the weight off. This time it has not worked so i tried low calorie low fat diet and exercise still no results. A. Sounds like you are doing everything right.

OK...so I'll assume the follwoing

You are eating at least 6 small meals a day with 20-35g of protein in each meal, low GI carbs in the morning and slowly dropping them out as the day progresses...and eating plenty of fibre carbs like celery, snow peas, broccoli, etc. Drinking plenty of water, limiting Junk food days, No alcohol, and getting plenty of rest.

So outside this and as far as supplements go I would consider, D-Toxalene, Hydroxycut Hardcore and perhaps even Acetyl L-Carntine.

BTW have you had you body fat tested with calipers, as the scales can be very misleading?

Due to both products contains caffeine it might be to much for the body's system to handle? if you want to try, do so but smaller dosage to see how your body react.

Instead i would recommend to use the Hydroxycut with cardiovascular session and the super pump 250 with weights session for best results.

We always recommend a good diet as your foundation.
80% is diet/recovery and 20% is training so the diet is a big part of the training/life for improvement of life-style. for best result with supplement a good diet is not a bad idea.

As a supplementation i would recommend a protein powder for muscle recover, improvement, strength, energy, and building. due to the improvement throughout the essential amino acids the body cant produce itself but also other amino acids which are important for muscle build and added vitamins and mineral.

Q. Hi

I am currently doing three am weight sessions, followed by 20 min cardio. I take kuan and glutamine before and after these sessions.

I have recenctly added Bikram Yoga to my routine to add a bit of variety. Bikram Yoga is the hot yoga where the room is heated to about 39 degrees and the class goes for 90 minutes. I am doing this at least three afternoons a week. When practiceing this yoga regularly they recommend taking electroyltes. I have been taking the musashi recovery stack after the class. Do you think I should stick with this or switch to an electroylte?

For supplementation we always recommend i protein powder for muscle development, build up, protection for breakdown and recovery etc.
There are products that are lactose friendly eg. one of the brands we stock is called Natural health supplements and its a instanced egg white protein.

if you like to add some more products i would recommend a pure micronized monohydrate creatine powder that you can add in to your protein shake for more muscle development and strength.

Q. I have been taking Max's Hydroxyphase protein 3 times a day with an additional supplement of L-carnitine (first thing in the morning and before lunchtime workout - total 1000mg). I do 50-60 minutes of cardio 6 days a week (running and rowing), and have tried to maintain a diet of ~1000 kcal per day (fresh fruit and vegetables, low carb, high protein, tuna, nuts etc), as i have to get to my gymnastic competition weight of 44kgs (currently 49.5kgs). I need to reach this weight in 4 weeks (MAX).
In the past it has been easy for me to lose weight but it sems no matter what I try this time i cant lose the 6kgs i need to. Can you please suggest a better diet and more efficient exercise regeim? I am desperate becaue the only thing stopping me from entering the competition is my weight?

A. It sounds like you really have everything down pat, we dont really recommend such low kcal but as a pro you might be fine. Just keep your meals regular...eg 8 meals a day? As people get older they sometimes find it harder than usual to lose those extra kilos but dont give up it just takes time!

Q. I want/need to lose around 16-20 kgs. (38 yrs old) I am currently having a Horleys protein shake morning and evening with 1 teaspoon of musashi fat loss powder. i would recommend first to finish the cycle you are on before changing to new product and then try to do some small or big changes in your diet depending how good it is or if you think you need to, its hard to see whats work if you take many different things and diet is 80% of the hole training cycle so if you can control that and loos weight that way supplementation will work even better.
I can recommend different product we stock different products with thermionic effect like hydroxycut hard core which is one of our stronger products, or i also recommend to take l-carnitine which helps with fat loss. if you like to try something differen.

No the will not effect you in a negative way, some of the fat burners have caffeine in them to help with the process of fat loss. So if you are caffeine sensitive or have any problem with blood pressure i would recommend to take it easy on them.

Q. I cycle to and from work each day (15km each way, quite hard) and run 8 - 10 km a couple of evenings. I'm also adding two 20 - 30 km walks a week as I head towards a 96 km endurance event (walking/shuffling) in July. I'm 187cm and 88kg. I eat normal family meals - nothing too scientific in my dietry mix. If I want, I can increase my intake of complex carbs quite easily through what I eat. But do you people have a supplement which might take away some of the general soreness and stiffness I am suffering? Don't get me wrong, it's not debilitating, just a little tiresome!? Because you are running, walking and cycling so much i would recommend glutamine, BCAAs or free form amino acids for recovery and muscle build up.
i also recommend glucosamine for joint support etc.

Q. Hi,
I need to lose 10kg. I am using Jari Love's (Canada) workouts, which are a lot like Pump classes, 3-5 times a week. I have no idea where to start with diet and supplementation to achieve my goal of losing fat and toning up. I have Musashi protein powder and some musashi fat metaboliser (which actually expired in Feb 08 - are they still safe to use?).

Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks?

I would recommend a protein like horleys ripped, or max's hydroxy phase they have thermogenical effect and with help you with the fat lose purposes.
or if you just like a protein with low to non carbohydrate and high protein i would recommend horleys ice Max's WPI or reload or musashi 92, or optimum 100% gold standard, etc.

Q. Hi,
I am female and run 3-4 times a week and do the odd bit of weights. I would like a shake/meal replacement that is good for fat loss and endurance during the training sessions. I really want to build on my distance and speed with the running.
I have previously used musashi P40 when I was right into weights and found that I put on quite a bit of muscle. I dont really want to bulk up this time and would rather thin out a little. Is there anything you could suggest?

Hi I would recommend a protein with less carbohydrates and have added ingredients like l-carnitine , chromium , choline , etc that are great for fat stripping, but also added ingredients like l-glutamine for recovery, increase mental energy, post recovery, and also immune system. this product is called pro-lean from Gen-Tec. this is my recommendation.

i would try to, get on with your new better diet it is the key in weight loss and weight gain.(80%)
in form of different products you can take to help you with your muscle development and with the weight loss i would recommend a protein powder first with high protein and low in carbohydrate. Horelys ice is a great product you can look at, the free form amino's will help with development and you probably going to get more energy just by starting to use a protein powder this product also has added l-glutamine for muscle recovery etc.
For weight loss i would try to get ACETYL-l-carnitine that you can take before training (1tsp) that will help you use and excises the fat as energy more easily, if you also like to you can combined this with 10 ml ultimate thermofuel from GEN-TEC

Q. Hi I currently attend the gym x5 a week varying weight work with cardio. I used to take hydroxyphase prior to having my son. Is it safe to use during my next pregnancy as I still intend to attend the same weekly sessions once pregnant again? If not what time frame is it for the body to rid hydroxyphase products from the system prior to conception? Can you offer an alternative that I can use during pregnancy and breastfeeding?

Q. Hi. I am a female and current train for track sprint cycling. I am in the process of gaining strength and power in the weight room as well as on the bike. Q. I am over 40 and have been getting pain in my shoulders (cuff), especially the right side. (I have had to drop my bench and incline press weight by 50%. my recommendation is for you to go to a physiotherapist and see what he/she say, maybe you have to leave shoulder exercises. bench shoulder press military press etc
There are some product that can help with joints, ligament and tendons but also muscle.
i would recommend glucosamine like you are taking but also l-glutamine for muscle tissue and the one i had in mind for you would be SuperCissus Rx from USP Labs that are for your ligaments and tendons.

Q. I am currently using Horley's awesome mass as a weight gainer, and also because its product description suits me best. I love the results im seeing but at the same time i get a lot of major reflux from the product.

1. What other similar products are available in the market at the moment that is very similar to Horleys awesome mass?

2. If i was to go with a Max's product, would the Muscle Growth GTE or Mass Gainer ProXtreme be better suited for an ectomorph?

Q. Creatine makes me urinate so much, and even if I drink massive amounts of water, I soon get stabbing kidney pain. Am I doing something wrong in how I take it ...
Do I need to take it with something else? (am I dificient in something)
Do I need to avoid certain things ... caffiene?
Is there something about timing that is important?
.... Any advice would help please.

IT sound like your body its not agreeing with you system and i would stop it and see if it is the creatine you are reacting to??do this first and the get back to us.

i would say both!!!
if you after a protein shake i would recommend one that have creatine added in it might work out a bit cheaper,
its also very important to have a diet as a solid foundation. A protein i would recommend is synthesis from syn-tec. or if you like to just get a protein powder like Optimum 100% gold standard whey and perhaps just pure creatine mono hydrate and add 1 tesp in every shake you take. both ways can be great it just a other preference of cost.
if you died to take the synthesis from syn-tec would take it 3 times/per day. mixed in water.

i will give you a eating and supplements overview that you can have a look at for some tips.

A. The Rolls Royce of fat metabolisers. L-carnitine regulates the long chain fatty acid transport across into the 'powerhouse' site of the cells, the mitochondria. Fat can only be converted to energy if L-Carnitine is present. L-Carnitine can also play a major role in reducing surface fats and also with conditions such as cellulite. It may also be helpful in the removal of ketones (fat waste) from the blood.

Carnitine is really not an amino acid, but because of the close structural sameness, it is normally classed with amino acids, and is also known as vitamin BT. It is available as D-carnitine, L-carnitine, DL-carnitine as well as acetyl-L-carnitine, but with L-carnitine being the most popular type. L-Carnitine is synthesized from the essential amino acids lysine and methionine, but enough vitamin B1 (thiamine) and B6 (pyridoxine) must be available.

Carnitine required for
Unlike a true amino acid, it is not used in protein synthesis nor as neurotransmitter, but is used for long-chain fatty acid transport and is required for entry of these long-chain fatty acids into the mitochondria of the cell, as well as for the removal of short-chain organic acids from the mitochondria, which frees the intra-mitochondrial coenzyme.

It is therefore important for the energy supply within the cell, as well as muscles, assists in preventing fatty build-up in areas such as the heart, liver, and skeletal muscles.

It may also reduce the risk of poor fat metabolism in diabetes, alcohol-induced fatty liver as well as the risk of heart problems. Carnitine has also been shown to improve the antioxidant effect of vitamin C as well as E.

Deficiency of carnitine
Primarily, carnitine deficiency occurs because of a genetic defect preventing carnitine transport and a deficiency may result in confusion, heart pain, muscular weakness as well as obesity.

Dosage
Dosages listed is the Recommended Daily Allowance (RDA), but be aware that this dosage is the minimum that you require per day, to ward off serious deficiency of this particular nutrient. In the therapeutic use of this nutrient, the dosage is usually increased considerably, but the toxicity level must be kept in mind.

Since carnitine can be manufactured in the body, supplementation of carnitine is not essential.

Most infant formulas that do not contain carnitine and could be supplemented with carnitine to the levels found in human milk, 11.3 mg/L (70 mmol/L) – but consult your medical professional regarding this matter.

When more may be required
Because of more muscle mass, men normally require more carnitine.

Other interesting points
Carnitine may have functions in cellular metabolism such as plasma membrane fatty acid remodeling, gene regulation and modulation of cytokine concentrations in experimental sepsis and cancer cachexia.

Esters of carnitine (acetyl- and propionylcarnitine) may have pharmacological value, by virtue of their antioxidant properties and/or ability to deliver readily oxidizable carbon units to mitochondria, in chronic disorders such as Alzheimer's disease and ischemia-induced myocardial dysfunction in angina pectoris.

The long-term administration of acetyl-L-carnitine to aged rats restores a synaptic pattern comparable to that of young rats. With the exception of the tocopherols all the antioxidants had lower concentrations in the Substantia nigra, which showed the most severe neuronal depletion with age. Acetyl-L-carnitine is being investigated as a determinant of neuronal longevity.

Acetyl-L-carnitine (ALCAR), is regarded with interest because of its capacity to counteract several physiological and pathological modifications typical of brain aging processes. In particular, it has been demonstrated that ALCAR can counteract the age-dependent reduction of several receptors in the central nervous system of rodents, such as the NMDA receptor system, the Nerve Growth Factor (NGF) receptors, those of glucocorticoids, neurotransmitters and others, thereby enhancing the efficiency of synaptic transmission, which is considerably slowed down by aging and appears to reverse age-associated deficits in cellular function, in part by increasing cellular ATP production.

Carnitine is found in good amounts in red meat, while fish, chicken and milk are also high in carnitine, while vegetables and grains contain very little of this nutrient
